I offer Professional Counseling services for children, adolescents, families, as well as extensive parent training. I practice with the following theoretical approaches: Cognitive-Behavioral, helping clients understand how their thoughts and feelings influence behavior; Client-Centered, focusing on supporting clients towards their goals; and Systems Theory, understanding that each person is connected to other individuals, family members and society and what influences these connections have in a persons life.
Children 0-6 – Counseling focuses on understanding the parents/caregivers concerns and the child. I use my expertise with children and families to assess the situation and provide a plan to meet the child’s needs. I always say, “Regardless of how bright, you do not do intensive psychotherapy with a five year old,” meaning once I assess the child, typically in 1-3 sessions, I help equip caregivers with knowledge and a plan to resolve their concerns. Caregivers are informed, empowered, and the children get better which strengthens the family unit.
Children 7-12 – Children at these ages are able to participate actively in therapy yet caregiver support is always a vital element. I build rapport with children easily as a God-given gift. I understand their concerns and the concerns of their parents. I use my expertise to put the “pieces of the puzzle together” into a clear picture of how to help the child and family reach their goals. Children are supported, encouraged, and feel genuinely cared for as I work with them towards their goals.
I encourage children and parents/caregivers to work together. As children who are developing mentally, physically, emotionally and characterlogically, they rely heavily on their parent’s and caregiver's support to overcome problems and reach their potential. Therapy is focused towards these ends. I help children apply themselves towards positive change and help parents identify the most effective methods of communication, bonding and discipline.
Youth 12-15 – Pre and young teens go through many changes and complexities in their lives from changes in appearance, hormones, schools, relationships with the opposite sex, quests for independence, acceptance, identity and exposure to new aspects of life and relationships. I use all the fore mentioned skills and techniques to help youth find stability and strength in a chaotic time. I help parents to skillfully navigate all the complexities of this time in their children’s lives.
Teens and Young Adults 16-20 – Hopefully maturity is kicking in and guidance is needed. Clients in this age group may be a little off course or heading down a destructive path. My goal is to guide to a path leading to a bright future. In doing so, beginning to overcome the past and change the present are likely both important. I also strengthen parents in their ability to provide structure and support without enabling.
Psychological Diagnosis & Psychotropic Medication - I am well trained and have extensive experience in both Psychological Diagnosis and the use of medication in therapy but the focus of my therapy is equipping and empowering. This is the recipe for lasting growth, strength, and success, not just temporary improvement.
Christian Counseling - Is a choice. I’ve found that a great majority of clients find new or renewed strength, resources, and purpose through Christian counseling; however, those who take advantage of Professional Counseling without Biblical elements benefit from my expertise in mental and behavioral health. Either way, people get better. That is the goal, more abundant living. You choose the path, I help you get there.
